Back to Travel 2020: Survey Results
Back in May 2020, we sent out a survey to our past + future travelers.
As more and more people started to talk about the topic of “reopening” and what traveling in a post-COVID-19 America will look like, we found ourselves wondering how our travelers are feeling about getting back to travel.
The survey asked comprehensive questions regarding the future of travel in the midst of the coronavirus world - covering topics like your concerns, if you had to cancel a trip, and if you are still planning to travel in 2020.
As the year has gone by (read: flown!), we have continued to plan surprise vacations, albeit, in an entirely new way. We recently launched Staycations, researched how hotels and airlines are keeping travelers safe, and revamped our itineraries and city recommendations to ensure we have the most up-to-date information available.
Over 1,400 people gave us their opinions on current and future travel plans.
Here’s what we found!

78% said They’re Planning on Traveling if Restrictions are Lifted
As of July 2020, 29 states have reopened - meaning that businesses are able to function in some capacity, public gatherings are restricted, and masks are often mandatory in public or inside businesses.
That being said, many states have reclosed or are pausing on their reopening plans. Our main priority at Pack Up + Go is to keep our travelers safe and comfortable. That’s why you can always let us know on your pre-trip survey any places you would not like to visit (and we’ll ensure you won’t be sent there)! We’re staying on top of the news and are keeping our travelers in the loop regarding any last-minute changes to their trip.
People are Going to Travel Differently This Year
We saw a huge increase in demand for Road Trips and Staycations compared to data from 2019. 41% of people said they're considering taking a Road Trip, 14% said Staycations are on their radar, and 45% said they’re still up for a Plane or Train trip this year. The good news is - we offer all three! Road Trips allow you to explore without having to get too far from home. We’ll recommend socially distant stops on the way to and from your mystery destination, plus you’ll get to travel from the comfort (and safety!) of your own car.
Staycations pack in the vacation vibes without having to leave your city. You’ll still enjoy the surprise of your trip details on the day you depart, but you’ll be more familiar with your city’s guidelines. Need more convincing? Additionally, 61% of people said they are sticking to domestic travel for the foreseeable future. Here at Pack Up + Go, we know that every American city has something incredible to offer and we pride ourselves on being domestic travel experts. All of our destination cities are located in the United States and we’re proud to help foster the American economy.
84% of People are Afraid they Won’t be Able to Enjoy their Destination to the Fullest
We totally understand this! With things changing seemingly every day, it’s fair to be concerned that COVID-19 will throw a wrench in your plans. Although we can’t foresee every unexpected closure or disruption in our destination cities, we are doing our very best to vet each recommendation, call restaurants to triple-check their policies, and provide additional suggestions for outdoor and socially distant activities.
Plus, we offer 24/7 customer care with our in-house Customer Experience Team so we’ll be there every step of the way in case you need absolutely anything!
Travel has Changed, but so Have We
We’ve evolved our processes to acclimate to the times to ensure safe travels for everyone.
We’re excited about the prospect of planning trips again (in fact, we’ve had many trips depart already!) and to continue to bring the joy of surprise vacations throughout the U.S. If you’re ready to take the leap and sign-up for a trip, always make sure to let us know any specific preferences you have on the pre-trip survey.
