Packing + Planning Tips for Outdoors Getaways

Summer is in full swing! Embrace the beautiful weather and journey into the outdoors.

The sun is shining, so we’re finding our next adventure outside. There are countless breathtaking outdoorsy locations across the US sporting several exhilarating activities from kayaking to hiking and everything in between. Here are our tips for planning and packing for your next outdoors getaway.

Planning Tips

Before you embark, it’s important to decide on a few key factors that will determine where you’re headed, how you’re getting there, and what you’ll be doing.

Climate + Region

Every location’s climate depends on the season we’re in and the region of the country it’s settled in. Decide on what type of weather you’re looking for and which part of the US you’d like to travel to. Research the weather for each season in your preferred destinations and choose one that aligns with your desires. Remember, inclement weather is always a possibility and it can be unpredictable, so you’ll want to be prepared - we’ll cover that in our packing tips.

Activity Preferences

In addition to your climate and location, you should have an idea of what activities you want to partake in. For example, if you’re looking for water-based activities, you’ll want to choose a location near the ocean or lakes, and if you want to hike, go for a spot with many trails and scenic views. Research the official websites of the destinations you have in mind to see what outdoors recreation they offer. If you are traveling with a group, it’s also a good idea to confirm everyone’s level of intensity they are comfortable with when it comes to the difficulty of hikes, length of bike rides, etc.

Transportation + Accommodations

Lastly, you should decide if you’d prefer to fly or drive to your destination and what kind of accommodations you prefer. If you’d like to stay somewhere more remote, you’ll need to drive at least part-way to your destination from your home or from a nearby airport, and you’ll be staying in accommodations like cabins, yurts, etc. rather than a hotel. You also have the option of choosing to stay in a more metropolitan area to enjoy city life during some parts of your trip and take a drive into the more nature-focused area during the rest of the trip.

Packing Tips

Now that you know where you’re going, let’s talk about the essentials to bring. This is a non-exhaustive list, so be sure to use resources tailored to your destination to help round out your packing list.

Stay Fueled

Take good care of your body during your outdoors excursions with protein and complex carbs. Some snack ideas include:

  • Protein bars

  • Trail mix

  • Beef jerky

  • Apples and peanut butter

  • Mixed nuts

  • Bananas

  • Dried fruits

Don’t forget to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Bring a portable reusable water bottle with a high volume. Drink before you head out and give your body time to absorb the water. For an added boost, use a powdered hydration booster to replenish electrolytes.

Prepare In Case of Injuries

No matter how safe we are, accidents can happen and it’s best to be prepared. Bring a first aid kit on your trip and be sure it’s well-stocked and doesn’t contain any expired materials. Before heading out for an adventure, research the area you are going to and find out if there are call boxes to reach out for aid and study the map of the area to be aware of any dangerous or risky spots along the way. Lastly, let someone who is not on the excursion with you know where you are going and plan to check in with them after you’re finished so they know you are okay, or can call for help if you do not get in touch.

Clothing Best Practices

Keep a keen eye on the weather during your trip. Temperatures can vary wildly depending on wind, proximity to bodies of water, shade, etc. It’s always smart to dress in layers so you can shed if the temperature is high and bundle back up if a chill comes through. Your clothing helps regulate your temperature, but it can also protect you from bug bites, sunburns, and injury from local flora.

Gear + Equipment

The gear you’ll need will depend on the activities you plan on taking part in, but no matter where you’re headed, the below are essential for making the trip safe and fun.

  • Proper footwear (swim shoes, hiking boots, etc.)

  • Outerwear for inclement weather

  • Sunscreen + SPF lip balm

  • Hat

  • Fully-charged flashlights

  • Bug spray

  • Extra socks

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Sunglasses

  • Moisture-wicking clothing

  • Snacks

  • First aid kit

  • Camera

  • Travel journal
